Home from home at The Vaults, Leith Edinburgh

Our doors are always open for you and your guests’ enjoyment so do join us – we’d love to see you.

THANK YOU

A special thank you to those many members and especially new members who visited The Vaults for the first time during the month of April.

There is no better place to enjoy our very special individually selected single cask malts than in the comfort of our Members Room, and why not sample some of the wonderful dishes from our bar menu while you’re here?

WELCOME LAURA TO THE VAULTS TEAM

We are all very pleased to welcome Laura Hay to the Vaults. From Glenlivet in the heart of Speyside and very much a "whisky girl", Laura will be familiar to many of you. She has a huge natural enthusiasm and knowledge of all our single cask whiskies and has conducted many of our Members’ tastings throughout the Society`s venues. She will prove to be a very valuable member of our team here in Leith. Next time you visit the Vaults and she is behind the bar, please say hello!

REPAIRS TO THE VAULTS ROOF

During the coming months The Vaults building will undergo essential roof and structural maintenance. The works will last for several months and disruption to our visiting members will be kept to a minimum.

As best as we can all the management and staff will endeavour to bring to all society members and guests who are visiting The Vaults the usual warm, friendly welcome on arrival. Offering you the best single cask whiskies available and bar food which is of quality and value, including many of your favourite dishes and much-loved sandwiches.

COLM MCNICHOLL

After a significant contribution to the on-going development and growth of The Vaults during the last 4 years, Colm has decided to leave us and pursue other interests in the whisky industry. He has been a very popular member of our team and will be missed by many of us, and more importantly many of you who have appreciated his quiet, polite professionalism and in-depth knowledge of our whiskies that many of you have bought personally from him. His last day of work at The Society will be the 31st of May, for those of you who would like to pop in to say goodbye and wish him well.

SOCIETY FLATS

When you’re visiting Edinburgh, consider staying in one of our attractive self catering flats – a few easy steps from the Members’ Room, tasteful modern decor and everything you need for breakfast! Contact Reception at The Vaults to book on 0131 554 3451 or click here for more details.

EARLY SUMMER LIST

I love snail mail! I draw great pleasure in hand writing letters and, perhaps, even greater pleasure in receiving envelopes with my name on. As long as the envelopes aren’t typed, typed envelopes generally indicate bills and the like but I love envelopes, especially envelopes with hand scrawled names and addresses or perhaps a shapely parcel or two.

You can imagine my excitement, therefore, when on Thursday morning, sitting on my door step was an immaculate green library box. I knew immediately what was inside; my new membership (after 4 years working with the team at the Vaults, I thought it was about time) along with a fresh copy of this years early summer bottling list.

And what a list it is!

Travelling north from Edinburgh, another stunner from distillery 125, our 13th cask, again shows how careful wood management can build complexity, flavour and depth. Huge vanilla notes on the nose followed by summer fruits and something reminiscent of butteries. Mmmmmm.

Travelling just a few thousand miles east to distillery 116 brings us to Nikka’s flagship distillery. A pleasingly balanced nose gives way to syrupy, smokey goodness. Adding a touch of water is a must bringing out a honey, lavender sweetness leaving those phenols teetering.

Finally, back to Auld Reekie, rolling into Edinburgh’s other station and G3.1. A jubilee of sugar based confectionary; tablet, butterscotch and toffee; developing into a more grown-up flavour of rich molasses and seasonal cake. A very rare treat from one of Edinburgh’s lost distilleries.

And so, it is these 3 bottlings I will be taking with me onto pastures new. A step into the unknown but now a dedicated member of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society

EVENTS AT THE VAULTS

Islay versus Island

Mon 19th May 2008

This should be interesting and fun and one for the phenolic buffs amongst you. Four single cask Society drams with a mystery one at the end of the evening. Can you tell the difference? The distinctive style of these single cask whiskies sets them apart from all the other malts produced in Scotland. Delicious fish pie is served.

Whisky with Ice Cream Tasting

Mon 9th June 2008

Following the success of this mouth-watering event at Leeds, we welcome Society member and ice cream wizard, Ian Gibson. Ian supplies his ice cream to Harvey Nicholls restaurants and Heston Blumenthal’s 3*** Michelin rated restaurant “The Fat Duck”. Four delicious varieties are served including two made from Society single cask malts and one prepared before your very eyes, served with our own homemade clootie-dumpling. Each ice cream is accompanied by a specially chosen Society dram. This is the first event of its kind for The Vaults and should be great fun, so start your summer early by booking now.

New Members’ Tasting

Mon 23rd June 2008

For newer members, this is the perfect chance to come along to the traditional home of the Society – a truly wonderful place. We share a little bit of Society history, guidance on how to nose and taste those single cask drams with a little about the different whisky regions, and so much more. . . . You’re amongst friends so let’s enjoy ourselves. A light supper is served.

Tullibardine Whisky and Beer Night

Mon 30th June 2008

This great little distillery is the focus of our attention tonight along with its very own beer matured in former whisky casks. Tullibardine was recently redeveloped with its own visitor centre. This evening, our guest speaker from the distillery is on hand to tell us all about the uniqueness of its malt whiskies. Five drams and a light supper will be served.
