29.91 Bovril and neeps
Cask No. 29.91
Immediate Islay identity – creosote, footbaths, disinfectant – with profound meaty notes – Bovril, beef flavoured Hula-hoops, and later a burned-out barbeque or roasting tin, with burnt toffee notes. The taste is very sweet, with traces of Camembert cheese, then coal dust: an oily texture and a long finish. With water, the roasting allusions continue with caramelised sweet potatoes and roast neeps. A big, chewy texture, and a sweet then tarry taste; beefy in the middle with, yes, creamy horseradish sauce (and a trace of mint), and charred meat in the finish. A splendid combo of smoke and sherry-wood from the only distillery to hold a Royal Warrant from the Duke of Rothesay.
