3.179 Fragrant smoke from an Islay hearth
Cask No. 3.179
This had fragrant smoke from peat and sticks burning in an Islay farmhouse hearth – also candied lemon and pineapple dipped in chocolate, banana, toffee, lavender and salty scallops; someone got grain sacks and ‘grooming a horse’. The palate gave crashing waves of sweetness with ocean surf not far away – buttered corn cob, lemon drizzle cake, ash, menthol and Van Nelle tobacco. With water, the nose found Blackpool rock rolled in ash, Kendal mint cake and Barbour jackets. A touch of bitterness came to the reduced palate (still nice though!) – humbugs, leather, Fisherman’s Friends and quinine. The distillery dates from 1779.
