35.40 Horse lick whisky
Cask No. 35.40
The nose carried the rich sweetness of treacle toffee, dark barley sugar and Demerara dregs in coffee cups. We found hints of clove rock and Hawick balls (buttery peppermint sweets); someone mentioned Scotch eggs. The unreduced palate was scrumptious and lively, offering polished leather, orange oil, molasses, coffee and toffee – with impressively swelling heat. The reduced nose had banoffee pie, treacle pudding, armagnac and sanded mahogany; the taste became syrupy, like pears poached in honey with a plain chocolate finish; the texture velvety yet rough, “like a lick from a horse” someone said. The distillery is named after the county.
