41.45 Audrey Hepburn in a ball gown

Cask No. 41.45

Rub a little on your hands and you will detect gorse flowers, and also tobacco ash. Curious. The nose has great ‘finesse’: mild and rounded, with chocolate, a hint of lemon balm and fragrant smoke – “a classy bird in a sheer silk ball-gown, smoking a Russian cigarette”. Dense and syrupy sweet in the mouth, with lemon curd and green mango, and still some lingering wood-smoke. A little water raises waxy notes, fudge, vanilla ice cream and sanded wood; the texture is thick and the taste sweet, oaky and sophisticated: ‘candid lotus seeds’. The distillery, at Carron on the Spey, was once amalgamated with Talisker.
