Owain Kirby
By The Society

The Society's Early Summer Newsletter cover featured a specially commissioned artwork by Stirling-based artist Owain Kirby.  This is the first in a series of special commissions as the Society supports established and up and coming artists in Scotland.

Here Owain Kirby describes his response to the theme of 'Everyone Blends'.

My response to the concept of blending the contents of casks was to think of it as a process of juggling a precise activity where the wrong move spells disaster. The blended mixture flows into a glass with a harmony of flavours suggested through the musical notes. A blend of people enjoy the results. I illustrate using a Lino-cut technique, which involves carving linoleum to make a relief printing block. Colour is achieved by building up layers of ink. Like the blending of the casks, this technique is an organic hand-made process requiring a balance of risk-taking, harmonising and an instinct for the craft.
