Join Jackie Kay for a girlie nicht oot
Friday 07 November 2008
Edinburgh, 23 Jan 2009It’s celebration time all round in January as our Girls Burns event at 28 Queen Street in Edinburgh reaches its fifth birthday and Scots all over the world celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns.
There’s a special treat in store for members attending this female-only event, with Scottish poet and novelist, Jackie Kay MBE, heading up an eclectic list of guest speakers and musicians.
Jackie, who has earned several awards for her work and regularly writes using traditional Scots dialect, cites Scotland’s treasured bard as a major inspiration. “His work was one of the first things that got me started writing poetry,” she told Unfiltered. “I love the range of what he does – it can be a tender love poem, or a rant against poverty. He was so imaginative and his work really comes alive in the Scots dialect much more so than the work he did in English.”
Jackie will be reading some of her own poems at the event, including some special ‘responses’ to some of Burns’ work which will be composed for the occasion. The evening will also include a Burns menu with a real ‘wow’ factor, champagne on arrival and an array of Society malts.
The Society will be running a full programme of Burns events in the UK.
